| Heredad Ugarte is located in the Rioja
Alavesa region, in the Ebro Valley, nestled between the Cantabrian
mountain range to the north and the Demanda (Ezcaray) mountain
range to the south. It is a region that is extremely rich
in history, culture and cuisine. Grapevine growing and winemaking
have been extremely important in this area since remote times.
Traces still remain of how wine was made here more than two
thousand years ago.
There are numerous monuments worth visiting
in close proximity to the winery:
- Palaeolithic and Neolithic dolmens.
- La Hoya Celtic settlement.
- Berberana hermitage built in Roman times (1 km. from the
winery).
- San Millan and Valvanera monasteries, where the first
words written in Euskera and Spanish are found.
- Medieval walled city of Laguardia, which was founded
in 1164 by King Sancho the Wise of Navarre. It conserves
a typical medieval structure, consisting of three long and
narrow main streets that are surrounded by the city walls.
Worth highlighting within are the two Gothic churches of
San Juan Bautista and Santa María de los Reyes, the
latter of which houses one of the most treasured examples
of Gothic art, its portico, an anonymous work dating back
to the 14th century and subsequently polychromed by Juan
Francisco de Rivera in the 17th century.
